8th Annual Mayor’s Spring Cleanup
Community residents, local students, and City employees volunteered their time and energy during the 8th annual Mayor’s Spring Cleanup. Volunteers gathered their cleaning tools and were prepared to eradicate trash that surrounded their neighborhoods. In the Frankford area, participants engaged in a cleanup where loads of trash were removed 10981614_1063968093630302_8111853970866318016_nfrom the playground and its surrounding area. Lawncrest Community Garden
Flowers are blooming and leaves are changing colors, all great indicators of the arrival of the long awaited warm seasons. As the temperature continues to peek into the mid-80s Lawncrest communityresidents comnined all of their gardening equipment and made their way over to the Lawncrest Recreation Center where they began preparing some space for a community garden. The transformation of the landscape will be sure to produce plenty of smiles and welcome visitors to the Lawncrest Recreational Center as we move closer to the summer season.11133979_1070993646261080_3362894826864581259_o

Comcast Cares Day11011681_1073785105981934_2643179360790981548_n
Comcast in partnership with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, Friends of Mifflin Square Park and PhillyRising collaborated to host the 14th annual Comcast Cares Day. This year’s projects included: preparing and painting a mural, planting flowers, and cleaning about the storefront corridor in Southeast Philadelphia.  Over 100 individuals participated in this special project to beautify a section of Southeast Philadelphia. These areas underwent a significant physical transformation due to this large scale project. During the project adults and children were seen actively engaging and were fully immersed in their projects. Their dedication and high energy contributed to the amazing work that was completed in this area. PhillyRising thanks all volunteers for helping make another successful Comcast Cares Day!

Garden Cleanup at Ridge Ave Community Garden
Spring is finally here; therefore, it is the perfect time to begin organizing tools and clearing space for gardens. The East Park Revitalization Alliance (EPRA) has already begun digging up dirt and planting vegetables for the spring and summer seasons. In addition to the already created community garden EPRA is preparing extra space for a new addition to the garden area. Prior to the development of the new gardening project PhillyRising and PowerCorps worked together with EPRA to remove piles of trash and obstacles where the new garden project will be stationed. PowerCorps members worked diligently and effectively removed hundreds of pounds of trash, and sheared already cut down tree branches so that they could be easily removed from the garden area. Thank you so much PowerCorps for your efforts to help develop a cleaner and greener city!20150429_134714
