The Richardson Dilworth Award founded by Mayor Nutter was established to honor distinguished City employees who exhibit excellent public service. Community partners are encouraged to nominate a City employee for one of the following awards: Distinguished Public Service, Innovation in Government, and Excellence in Customer Service. In preparation for Veteran’s Day the Travis Manion Foundation, PhillyRising Collaborative, and Frankford CDC will host a cleanup of the Frankford commercial corridor and surrounding neighborhoods.

On Saturday, November 8, 2014 the Lawncrest Community Association and PhillyRising will conduct a cleanup of the outdoor area of the Lawncrest Recreation Center. This space will be the site for a Veteran’s Day event on Tuesday, November 11th.

Hawthorne Cultural Center Cleanup
Students from Temple University Beasley School of Law volunteered their time and services to help clean up the interior of the Hawthorne Cultural Center. Temple volunteers expressed their reasons for participating in the cleanup and were ready to enhance the appearance of the recreation center. The volunteers left the site with smiles on their faces knowing that their efforts will benefit the children, parents, and staff who utilize that facility.
Lafayette College Alternative Fall Break Experience
The Alternative Fall Break School Break Club from Lafayette College traveled to Philadelphia for their fall break to perform a series of community service projects throughout the city. Volunteers helped beautify the Francis Myers Park, painted a stairwell at the Houston Community Center, prepared flower beds at a community garden in Strawberry Mansion, and assisted in the packaging of food at MANNA. Through their hard work and positive attitudes the Lafayette College volunteers exhibited the power of teamwork.

2nd Annual PhillyRising Conference
Hundreds of community partners poured into Temple University’s Mitten Hall to meet with representatives from different City agencies in order to submit their service requests. Through the effective practice of the “Best Meetings” agency representatives were able to note and submit service request via their technological devices during their meeting with community partners. In addition to meeting with agency representatives community partners participated in Career Boot Camp and Financial Counseling sessions. We would like to thank the Philadelphia Police Department, Town Watch Integrated Services, Licenses & Inspections, Philadelphia Streets Department, Philly 311, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department, Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee, Community & Life Improvement Program, Financial Empowerment Center and the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations for the services they provided at the conference.

Mural Dedication at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center
Members of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Guild Program worked diligently to create the “Staircases and Mountaintops” mural portrayed at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. On Thursday, October 23rd Mayor Michael Nutter, Managing Director, Rich Negrin, and Philadelphia Mural Arts Executive Director, Jane Golden gathered with community partners to celebrate the completion of the mural.

Congratulations to the Germantown Avenue Business District on winning the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Garden of Distinction Award! Amid a large pool of contestants the Germantown Avenue Business District was selected as the winner.
