Youth Citizens Engagement Academy
In February and March, a group of students from the Village of Arts and Humanities’ after-school program participated in a youth-focused Citizens Engagement Academy. This six-week course taught students about City government and introduced them to programs and services that could help them become more engaged in their community and prepare them for thinking about the future, including AmeriCorps, Philly311, PhillyGoes2College, and the Philly STAMP Pass.
Alternative Spring Break Volunteering
Last month, PhilyRising hosted a team of Alternative Spring Break volunteers from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. The students helped with a variety of painting and cleanup projects in Kensington, Haddington, Hawthorne, and Swampoodle. Visit our Facebook to see photos of their work!
Cleanup with Frankford CDC
On Friday, March 21, PhillyRising and Frankford CDC teamed up for a cleanup at the corner of Frankford Avenue and Paul Street. PhillyRising provided over $500 worth of equipment to be used for future cleanups as part of the Frankford Litter Reduction Initiative. Many thanks to the Streets Department for the special trash pickup!
Southeast Block Cleanup and Resource Fair
Over 150 volunteers came out on Saturday, March 22 to participate in a cleanup and community celebration in Southeast Philadelphia. The daylong event also included a resource fair, featuring organizations like the 3rd Police District, Town Watch, EPIC Stakeholders, PECO, and Philadelphia Recycling Rewards. Many thanks to Starbucks for donating coffee to fuel our early-morning volunteers, to PECO for supplying residents with energy-efficient lightbulbs, and to Philadelphia Recycling Rewards for giving out recycle bins and helping residents sign up for Recyclebank.
Mosaic Installation at CAPA
PhillyRising has been working with the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia(MSoP) to move a 40-foot-wide glass mosaic from the Loews Hotel on Market Street to the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). The mosaic, which until recently adorned the restaurant at Loews, was set to be removed during renovations at the hotel and needed a new home. After a number of meetings with MSoP, Loews Hotel, and other great partners to determine the perfect fit, it was donated to CAPA. With the help of Richard Watson, the original artist, Stephen Miotto, the original fabricator, Jason Zahaczewski, and the Humphrey Construction Group, the mosaic has been safely re-installed in the Grand Hall at CAPA.
